Basics Of Trend Trading Strategies

Read carefully because we will discuss the basics of trend trading, a trading strategy that provides greater profit potential for your investments and trading portfolios. I’m sure you already know that old saying, “The trend is your friend.” Yes, many in the business world believe that following current market trends is wise. Following the trend means that we follow the main currents that flow with the crowd. Going against the flow, it might work, but it will take a lot of time, energy and resources.

Ok, so what is a trend trade? Trend trading is a trading strategy in which a trader identifies a market trend and then follows it, takes a trading position based on it, and in the future, the trader closes the trading position when the trend starts to change its direction. The advantage of trend trading is very obvious, our trading position will be in the same direction of the market. Obviously, this is very safe for your money, especially if you do margin trading in both the stock market and the forex market.

Besides security, another advantage of trend trading is the high profit potential. For example, the moving average of the intraday trend on the currency pair GBP/USD, when the trend moves at least 100 points. That’s a lot of money, especially if you can get a consistent foundation. Although a trending market is less common than a non-trending market, you can sum up your profits if you can catch such a market movement, say for a month, it is clear that you will make a big profit.

To take advantage of every trend trading opportunity, you definitely need to have good trend analysis skills. Your accuracy in determining the trend in the market is very important. One tool you can use is the Moving Average (MA) because it is a good trend-following indicator. For intraday trading, you should use an MA with a shorter period, such as a 12-period MA. My favorite is the 12 period EMA. You can also use multiple time frame charts such as 4-hour, 1-hour, 15-minute and 5-minute with the same MA on all charts.

For example, when the GBP/USD price rises above the 12-period MA on all 4-hour, 1-hour and 15-minute charts, this indicates that a trend is emerging. You can then enter the market with a 5-minute chart for more accurate timing. As long as the price remains above the 12-period MA on the 1-hour chart, you can hold a buy position. An early reversal signal can be found on the 15-minute chart, when the price starts to break below the 12-period MA on the chart, then you should prepare to close your position and take the profit. Be creative, you can modify this simple technique to suit your trading style. Keep learning and practicing until you find the trend trading strategy that works best for you.
